Todd and
Lori Byerly are
volunteer missionaries rather than stipended missionaries and are
personally responsible for managing all of their own expenses, except
medical insurance and housing. However, they receive support from St.
Paul’s Lutheran Church in Davenport (their home congregation) as well as
from the Southeastern Iowa Synod (their home Synod). Trinity channels
its $1,000 annual gift to them through St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
For
two years, they served as missionaries at Tumaini University in Iringa,
Tanzania. Lori served as Assistant Librarian at the University
Library. This placed her in a good position to handle the M-bags of
college textbooks that Trinity received from the Augustana Bookstore and
faculty and sent to Tumaini. Todd’s electrical skills enabled him to be
of service to the University in many different ways including the
installing of a major electrical grid that made the electrical service
to the University much more dependable and also the maintenance and
expansion of the campus computer system. During
2006, Todd and Lori moved to the Pare Diocese in Northeast Tanzania that
has a companion relationship with the Southeast Iowa Synod (SEIA).
Working directly with the Pare Diocese, they are helping SEIA establish
a meaningful relationship and an expanded partnership with the Diocese.
One of their first assignments was to review the health care situation
within the diocese, especially at Gonja Hospital, which is the only ELCT
hospital in the Pare Diocese. |
